Your Guide to Clubs and Societies
At the University of Glasgow, there are over 300 clubs and societies, so no matter what you are interested in, you are guaranteed to find a university society that suits you. Some are about socialising with like-minded people, while others are about playing sports, taking part in activities, sharing hobbies, or helping the wider community. How to Join First, you will need to decide which society you want to join, and the University of Glasgow is not short of options! You can learn about the university’s societies in a number of different ways. For example: Each year, the university runs a Welcome Fair where societies set up stalls to allow people to learn more about their society and sign up. The university’s societies are listed on the SRC website. You can either search for the specific society you are interested in or scroll through and see if anything catches your eye. You can find a list of all of the societies you can join by following this link: https://www.glasgowunisrc.org/clubs-socs/find/ . If you do not see a society that piques your interest, you can even create your own society! Many societies will host a free social event to give you an insight into what they do and to allow you to meet other members so you can decide if you want to become a member of the society. If you decide you would like to join a society, you then have to sign up to become a member on the SRC website. Some societies will charge a membership fee, which you will be asked to pay when you go onto the SRC website and sign up to become a member. The price can vary depending on the expense of running the society and the type of social activities it provides. But know that there are many societies that do not charge a fee and are completely free! Society Positions There will be a group of people in charge of each society. They will all have specific positions on the society’s committee. While these positions will vary based on the society, there are a few that most societies are likely to have on their committees, such as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and welfare officer. If you want to join the committee, you must either wait until your second year or see if a committee position becomes available during your first year. To join the committee, you typically have to first express your interest and then be formally elected during the society’s annual general meeting (AGM). Society Events You can keep up to date on all of the events that the society you are a part of runs by using the My SRC app. The My SRC app is your personalised portal for navigating societies and finding events and tickets. To use the app, simply download it from the App Store or Play Store and then login. Logging in to the My SRC app is super straight-forward; just enter your student ID or university email address. Then enter your mobile number, set a pin code, and you are all set! Once you are logged in, you can access various pages that allow you to view a list of all the societies you are currently a member of, the latest events from the societies you are in, and if you have purchased a ticket for an event (note that not all events will require a ticket).
