How to Prepare for your Open Day
Having narrowed down your university options, attending Open Days can really help you to make your final decision, as exploring the campus and the area are key to knowing if a university is right for you. Here are some of my top tips to prepare for your Open Day.
Plan your journey
The first thing to plan is the logistics. How are you going to get there? Are you close enough to travel there and back in a day, or will you need to stay overnight? If you drive, the University will have car parking available on campus. If you’re coming via public transport, try to book tickets in advance. This will not only save you money, but you’ll be able to plan your day and give yourself enough time to get back for your train or bus without rushing.
If you are travelling a long way, you may need to find accommodation for at least one night. When I came to a UCLan Open Day, I had to stay over due to travelling a long distance but was fortunate to have family in the area that I could stay with. However, if this isn’t an option for you, there are plenty of hotels in Preston and Burnley that are close by to campus.
Do your research and write down your questions
Before you come onto campus, make a note of any questions / queries you have and think about the things that are important to you when choosing a university. This could be career opportunities on your course, social life, facilities and beyond.
One thing I would recommend doing when you come onto campus is to go on a Campus Tour. These show you all the key buildings, as well as accommodation and other facilities. Going to an Open Day gives you the chance not just to see the university but the surrounding area too, so take time to scope out a good place for lunch or ask any students there for advice on the best clubs and pubs!
You might already have an idea of the course(s) that interests you or have your heart set on one already. On the day, you’ll be able to ask the academics more about them and whether they align with your future career aspirations – so don’t be shy and come along with all your questions.
My experience at an Open Day
I came for an Open Day back in 2017 and for me, no other university compared to the University of Central Lancashire and I knew this from the moment I stepped onto campus. The icing on the cake for me was the Deaf Studies lab on my British Sign Language and Deaf Studies course as well as the free gym membership for students (which is available at both Preston and Burnley Campuses at Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre and St Peters Leisure Centre – subject to eligibility criteria).
The most important thing to remember is that the Open Day is there for you to get a real feel for the University and to help you choose your perfect degree. Make the most of your time and enjoy it!
